Kaylei Bailey is a high school student who is constantly writing and changing. She lives in Grand Prairie, Texas with her mother, two siblings, two cats and a roommate. She has been previously been published in various competitions.  

Blinded Rage
​

Words are on the tip of my tongue
Begging to be said
They burn me.
They burn them.
They burn everything
Striking like a snake
It does no good against the coat of honey
A pressure sits on my chest,
As the devil rests on my shoulder.
" Speak " they command,
The angel disappears as my mouth opens.
I let my thoughts and my feelings flow freely
Despite the looks I get
The looks of horror
The looks of pain.
I don't hear my heart shatter
I don't hear theirs either.
I don't think, I just feel.
I let out word for word
Striking and striking until one of us has won.
It's only then, that I pause when a new feeling sets in.
Guilt
The anger--the rage
It's gone.
My defense down,
I'm floored with humanity
I see their eyes water with tears and I blink back my own.


But as soon as the weakness has shown, it's gone.
I cut my ties.
I stand straight, raise my chin and without a final look;
I turn on my heel and walk off.
I set my jaw as tears began to flow.
But I chide myself.
You picked the life of pride.
You picked the life of truth.
​Now, you must stick with the consequence of rage.
 

​Insecurities

Numbers on a scale don't mean a thing
They cry out while making comments on fat and rolls
Oh it's just a zit they wave away before pointing to a girl and yelling pizza face
 
we learn to judge ourselves so that others don't judge us as harshly
I squint at myself in the mirror
Eyes scanning over my face for impurities by society's standards
Pimples
Crooked teeth
A scar on my right cheek
I look hesitantly at the scale next to me
The rational, loving part of my brain is yelling the numbers don't matter
The paranoid one just whimpers out
check, just in case.
The paranoia wins.
I step on the scale.
120.6lbs it reads
I inhale
I'm nearing the max for my height range
I shake my head and step off, glancing at myself once more in the mirror
Hazel eyes
Long lashes
A natural arc with my eyebrows
These are the good things I notice
and then I walk away
I turn away from the mirror
Turning away from all the insecurities for the night
 
 

Wind
​

​You propel me forward into an unknown,
hands against my back
my hesitant footsteps nothing against the power of your push
You caress my face, kiss my ear, breathe down my neck
You push me around and drag me along
You are everywhere and nowhere
You are like a child, free to roam
but your mother's mood influences your own
You push me further, motivating me
Telling me to work and never forget
but you stand in my way
screaming at me to take a step back
Where is your logic? To build me up and play me down
But I can't stop loving you
The way you change and are inconsistent
The way you are everywhere yet nowhere
It is truly magnificent
