THE DAY MY HEART DIEDAmy and Angela picked Anthony and I up to stay with them for a while till we found a place to live. A new state and a new beginning. I wanted to settle down, get married and I wanted a career.
Last month, Amy refused to pay her utilities leaving us all abandoned. Her trailer smelled pungent of dog fecal matter. The ammonia from the cats and the dogs was musty and acrid. The smell of stagnant, spoiled food in the intense humidity abrasively filled the air. Amy’s animals she never kept up on, Dirty, greasy dishes in the sink. The smell would have smothered a horse to his demise. Amy expected us all to live like squatters in the middle of summer. Sweaty, Gritty, and drenched with sweat, we would take baths with warmed up water on the grill. We all smelled ripe. We all had to pour water in the toilet every time we evacuated. Angela had enough so she paid for a hotel for a couple of days so Zach, Brandon, Anthony and I could can all have proper showers and eat hot food. Anthony and I go back to the trailer to wait upon my delivery. We wait in the car and talk. “I can’t believe Angela had to put money out for another hotel because Amy couldn’t pay her bills,” he said bitterly. “It’s bullsh… that she gives everything to her daughter, even the money meant for the water and electricity, she is so irresponsible!” I stated indisputably. He coughed and gasped for breath. “You really need to see a physician honey you might have bronchitis!” I interjected. “I don’t have medical, sweetheart only Family Planning. If I want free condoms or sterilization, they pay for that!” Anthony said sarcastically. “I know, I said. The Fed -Ex truck drove down the dusty pathway kicking up dust and rock. I stood out in the fire-ant infested crunchy, lime-green grass. I shouted and waved my hands to get her attention. 4:39 pm Grabbed the package, locked the trailer door, and Anthony and I drove back to the hotel. Angela and Zach were outside taking a cigarette break when Anthony and I pulled into the hotel driveway. I picked up the package and getting stuff out of the backseat, Angela helped take things upstairs. I go to put my computer package on the bed suddenly, Zach runs up to the room. “Something is wrong with Anthony,” Zach said distressed. “What?” I said. Running down the stairs behind Angela, grabbing her phone. We came downstairs and saw a nightmarish sight, I was aghast. Anthony was on his back, in front of the car, in the hotels parking lot. Angela called 911 as I was checking for a pulse, Nothing. Flies and gnats gathering around his cold, clammy mouth. The 911 operator told me to preform emergency CPR so, I did hesitantly. I hadn’t done CPR in a while. I continued to press down on his chest crying, mad, and screaming. Horrific thoughts running around in my head. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING TO ME! I thought to myself trying to keep hopeful. As I was trying to get his heart to start, a cascade of mixed emotions came over me. “DAMN IT, DON’T DIE ON ME,” I screamed while my tears rolled down my face as he started to Cloud Grey mixed with Alabaster White. His eyes had no emotion and were lifeless staring into the abyss of the overcast sky, I knew he was gone but I was in denia Paramedics, Ambulance, Fire and three cops show up at the scene They come like a flock of vultures fighting over a meal, surrounding him to pick at his flesh. I look up and saw Brandon and many other faces peering out of the hotel windows watching the action It was ominous and creepy, multiple eyes piercing at my empty soul. They put on the portable heart pump on his chest trying to get the heart to beat into life. Anthony’s vitals were taken and the cops took everyone’s information. They got a stretcher and wheeled his lifeless body into the ambulance. The sirens fell silent going down the street. I receive a call soon after they leave. “This is Officer Daniels, could you come to the hospital?” he asked somberly. “Yes, be there in 10 minutes, “I said. Angela and I drove to the hospital. “I hope they resuscitated and they’re keeping him for observation,” Angela said trying to keep Positive We both knew better. 5:39PM The officer led us into a waiting room where a doctor, and two nurses were waiting. I thought to myself suspiciously thinking of the worst outcome. The doctor told us the one thing I didn’t want to hear. Angela and I started to cry. I held my hand over my mouth shocked at the news I was told. Angela freaked out. “I’m truly sorry,” he said with remorse. They led us into Trauma Room 1 their he laid motionless exactly as I saw him earlier with a blue tube protruding from his throat. I talked to him one last time and to pay my respects. “Baby, I told you to see a Doctor,” sobbing so much that it could fill a city street. “NO, I don’t know what to do without you honey!” I screamed as I choked back my sorrow. “GOODBYE, BABY, I love you,” Bawling. I kissed him on the forehead and put the sheet over his head. We walked out of the hospital. Heartbroken. This was the day my heart died, shattered like a baseball thrown against a mirror. Shattered pieces of my life along the floor. My future of growing old together Ripped from my soul. I never felt so empty. I know that he would want me to live on, be successful in my future, and take care of Brandon. For him I must make him proud of me.
