​MAMA'S VISIT

​You came.  Tears fell as
we caressed one another.       
Sustaining conversation
became a chore after a
week. Togetherness voided
privacy.  Squeezing in
responsibilities, I realized
I was not on vacation;
only you were. Relieved to
return to my personal
pattern, I watched your
plane depart.  Then cried.

​

 
We watched TV
And made wry jokes about the performers.
With so much to say
We remained silent, feigning indifference.
A haphazard "goodnight"
Without so much as an embrace
Sent us to our separate places
To cry to the silence
Of our love for eachother.
Why must tomorrow be so
Hard to accept?

​ cabbage patch and barbie

​You played house
with a favorite doll,
unconditionally loving,
singing, caring while
dolly slept in a tiny
carriage you stuffed
with toys for company.
Dolly's plastic body
was stroked as she
lay on your pillow.
   Now, you're a
   grown woman
   shopping for
   a big carriage
   and crib to
   cradle your
   own baby.
I couldn't stop time.
