“I will never leave your side, no matter what you say. You couldn’t get rid of me even if you tried. Every step you take I’ll be right behind you, just like I always have been. I love you James and I’m not leaving.” Perfect, they would be crazy not to cast me. She wiped the salty tears off and smiled. The ceiling above her was chipped and water stained. She sighed, feeling her chest cave in as her stomach tensed up. This could be the day her life changed. This could be the day where she no longer needed to stay in run down hotel rooms with stiff beds and water stained ceilings. As she inhaled, the strong scent of mildew and urine filled her nostrils. Never again, she thought. She paced the small hotel room, her long skinny legs allowed her to take only 3 steps until she hit each opposite side. A large mirror covered the entire left wall, allowing her to recite her lines to her reflection. The lighting in the room shifted as the day went on and it was now raining, yet she hadn’t stop rehearsing her lines until the cab was outside ready to bring her to the audition. She fluffed up her short blonde hair, reapplied her cherry red lipstick and skipped out the door. “Can I borrow your newspaper?” She asked a rough looking man in a long coat who was standing in the doorway of the hotel. “My newspaper?” He asked. “I have a big audition today, it could really be my break through. I don’t want to get my hair wet, can you imagine the impression that would leave if I came in with flat, wet hair. Sir, I promise if you let me borrow this newspaper I’ll repay you when I’m rich and famous.” The man looked down at the newspaper he was currently reading, then looked at Angelina. He shook his head slightly as he chuckled and closed the newspaper. He handed it to her, “good luck,” he said with a slight smile. Angelina unfolded the newspaper and ran out to the cab. She shook the wet paper outside of the car before closing the door. “Hello!” She beamed. “Where ya goin’?” The cab driver asked, with a distant yet annoyed tone. “3294 Adams Avenue. I’ve got a big audition,” she said. “Whatever you say lady,” he scoffed. Angelina shook off the response from the rude driver. No one could get her down today. Today was her day, she could feel it. She looked out the window, the lights coating the street made the raindrops on the window sparkle. She closed her eyes and she could imagine the sparkly jewels she will be wearing once she’s a star. Her dress decked from head to toe in crystals, and her white teeth blinding the paparazzi as she flashes them a giant grin. After an hour of silence, they finally arrived at the audition building. She tipped the cab driver extremely kindly, despite the rude comments. She would have lots of money once she was a star, it was the least she could do. The butterflies in her stomach were multiplying as she walked through the door. A woman with dark hair and red glasses that matched her shirt sat behind a desk across the room. “Name and what you’re here for,” the receptionist shouted from across the way, not making eye contact. “Me? I’m Angelina Robins. I’m here for the audition for Angel’s Death.” “Oh, sweetie. That’s been cancelled. Didn’t you get the message? We called a half an hour ago. Sorry,” the receptionist sighed, still not looking up from her work. “What? But… but I’ve been preparing for this for months. I spent every cent I had to fly out to California for this,” she said, her voice cracking as the tears fell. “Sorry, sweetie. That's Hollywood for ya.” Her world had fallen down around her. With her head hung low, she walked out the door and into the rain. The rain no longer seemed to sparkle, and the neon lights just hurt her eyes. Alcoholic men lining the streets called out at her as she walked by hoping to find a cab. Her dreams were crushed. That’s Hollywood for ya.
