                              The Kale Chip Woman
 

​
I liked the way
your flannel,
down jacket
hugged
the curvature
of your small
frame.
 
I wanted
to hold your
hand while
engaging
in flashy
conversation
about how
Barack Obama
would never
fulfill the needs
of the populace.
 
I guess that
it’s too late
now;
 
But your non
perfumed scent
of half eaten
Kale chips
will remain
on my mind.


                                   Polling for Student President
 


I asked you
if you wanted to
chat about the politics
of Lane Community College
on a humid spring day
 
You said that we
could take a ride in
the first building’s
elevator.
 
I knew by
your answer
that you didn’t
want to talk long,
since the elevator
only served one
floor
 
I asked if you
wanted to vote
for me for Student
President and you said
no.
 
I felt the anger
wash over me
as you exited
the cramped,
claustrophobic
space.
 
I took a deep breath
and headed to my next
destination.
 
 
 
  
                                                             Courtyard Memories
 


I sat in the
naked courtyard,
attempting to focus
on my copy of Bukowski’s
collected works.
 
You passed by with
a small frown on your young,
 perfect visage.
 
 
My olfactory sense
picked up the scent of lilies
emanating from you.
 
I battled back and forth
in my mind whether to
say hello.
 
I took a deep sigh, readjusted
my focus, and found my place.
