JANUARY 2022 ISSUE - FINALLY ONLINE

6/5/2022

Hello,

As result to an accident, I can't use one of my arms, so I will be very short.

That is why it has taken me so long to put January online.

I am working on February right now, so, please, be patient.

Have fun reading this issue. It is worth your time.

Roxana - As with the others, I hope that your arm is better. I'm having a hard time getting into the site because my attempts end up with "privacy error". I think that my sub went through, but when I try to access a publication, it doesn't work at all.

Thanks, Doug Hawley

Hello, Roxana. I've sent several emails over the past several months asking about updates on the release of the next issue. The last issue was published in June, and the February issue is now 9 months late. Please provide us with an update as to when you expect the issue will be released. And please let us know if your email is still working or not.

Hello Ms. Roxanna.

My story was accepted for publication some time ago. It has been delayed over a year now, and I am just wondering if I can expect it to be published at all anymore. Please let me know if my story's publication is still going to happen or not.

Thank you for your time.

No idea. I've tried reaching out to Roxana directly, but I never get any response. Seems that's the same for a lot of people here.
I don't know what's going on, but even with a broken arm, being 10 months behind with almost no clear communication or consistent updates is not good.

Except, if that were the case, then why have so many other short stories published on the website?
I think it's more plausible that this year's issues are just dreadfully behind schedule for a variety of reasons. All I want is some communication from Roxana about this, because I'm almost at the point of pulling my story and looking for someplace else to submit it. I hate having to air my thoughts on this on a public comment section, but if she won't respond to emails, I don't know what else to do.

Hopefully, openly speculating about potential plagiarism can spur some response from Roxana. This is bizarre there has been nothing for months without a perfunctory acknowledgment of concerns.

I think that's what is happening. Go to her Twitter and you can Google her and find she posts tons of books weekly. There is no other explanation for it. This website should get shut down

Holy crap I didn't know about this! Well I guess we can rule out her being dead or MIA. Thanks a ton for the heads up! I'm gonna look at everything she's posted (and boy, it looks like she's been busy!) and see if she's plagiarized any of my work. Oh boy, I am ready to sue her ass if I find my work in there!

Alex
4/24/2023 09:19:14 pm

Well, I can't find anything that seems plagiarized, but it's even weirder than that. Her Twitter feed is just an endless scroll of the same exact 5 or so tweets advertising her self-published books. I have no idea how far back it goes because she keeps sending out the same group of messages every day like ten times every few hours like it's automated. So, I guess that doesn't rule out the possibility that she died/went missing and her Twitter feed is just auto-running at this point. Very strange.

Nothing. I'm incredibly disappointed with how this paper is being run. I'm already looking into other outlets for submitting my story. I regret submitting to this publication now, it's clear that it isn't being run professionally. I can maybe find some excuse why the editor-in-chief might be MIA—we all struggle with stuff in our personal lives, and I have no idea what Roxana might be going through—but to have the entire team be this silent for this long is just unacceptable. I'm just glad they didn't make us sign a contract or anything so we aren't bound to wait for them.

Dear Roxana and staff (wherever you all are),

Please remove my short story from publication. I no longer want my work to be associated with this magazine.

While I doubt I have to request this since I don't believe you're ever going to publish anything more at this point, I feel I should make my desires clear nonetheless. We have been waiting for over an entire year for the release of the February 2022 issue, and I can only imagine how despondent those applying for later issues must feel seeing how far behind the journal has fallen at this point. We have received almost zero contact from you all during this period despite repeated attempts at outreach both via direct email and via these comment threads, and it has become unacceptable.

I find this particularly insulting to each of us, because as writers, we each put a great deal of effort into our stories, and into making them as good as possible for a reading audience. And not only do we put effort into these stories, but we are willing to submit them to publications such as yours that do not pay us for our labors. And while that is unfortunately a common practice in this industry, it does not excuse the kind of negligence and unprofessionalism that this publication has engaged in.

We have all made repeated efforts to contact you and your team for updates, only to be repeatedly met with silence over the last year. You probably aren't even going to read this comment. If you do, and you do choose to respond to it, then I must ask where you and your arguably non-existent editorial staff have been over the past year and why you have refused to keep any of us updated. If there has been some personal difficulty that has prevented you from engaging in work on this journal, then that should have been communicated to us either by yourself or by your staff a long time ago. Otherwise, I can't fathom what reason you must have for just disappearing and leaving us all with radio silence.

Speaking for myself, I don't care much what the reason is. I don't want my work to be published in your journal, and I would greatly appreciate it if you would remove my story from consideration, assuming you ever had any intention of publishing it in the first place.

Sincerely,
Alex

None of us on this blog know what has happened to this Website and, as such, it's unfair and mean to be nasty in the comments. As writers, we can submit anywhere we like; the list of international journals is huge.

Speaking for myself, I'm not trying to be mean. But there is a level of unprofessionalism and disregard here that has to be addressed. Regardless of whether we can publish elsewhere, we shouldn't have to deal with over a year of silence from a journal that professes to be legitimate in any way. For some of us, this is our first ever publication, and to have it delayed interminably with not even a word of assurance or communication on their end is nothing short of rude and inconsiderate. I don't think it's something we should tolerate, especially since we're literally giving away our work for free.

Hello,

I’d like to please request that my short story “Waste” be removed from this consideration. It was supposed to be published in the February issue and I, like many other commenters, have waited more than a year for this to become a reality. I waited much longer than I should’ve, if I’m being honest, because I was so excited to see my work be published.

Now that it’s become obvious this won’t be happening for whatever reason, I’m asking that my short story be removed from the February 2022 issue (if that ever comes out) so I can shop it around elsewhere.

I’m very disappointed in how this publication is being run and how little the staff seems to care about the time or consideration of the writers looking forward to being published in their magazine.

When my story was accepted here, I withdrew it from countless other magazines and collections – places that may have actually been interested in publishing my work, which is apparently not the case here. I’m sure this is the case for many other writers who were “accepted” at Scarlet Leaf Review, who now have to start submitting all over again after wasting more than a year waiting when they could have been submitting their work elsewhere.

I understand that life can be messy and things come up, but the lack of communication from the staff about what’s causing the delay is unacceptable. I’m sorry if unforeseen forces have affected the ability of the editors and staff to do their jobs efficiently and/or stopped the publication permanently, but whatever the reason, I and the other writers anxiously waiting for updates deserve better than this.

I signed a book contract in December 2021 with Scarlet Leaf to have my book published. It was finally published on 1 November 2022. I last spoke with Roxana Nastase when she called me in mid-January this year. She promised to get an accounting of my book sales. She also said she would get back to me about getting my bank account information, for royalties. I have not heard from her since. The phone number she called from, I discovered, was disconnected.

Jesus. If she doesn't get back to you soon, you should seriously consider taking legal action of some kind. She might be stealing from you. The majority of us I imagine didn't have to sign any contract and didn't stand to gain money from this anyway. But it's incredibly suspicious to go radio silent on someone to whom you owe book returns. Look for a lawyer, and you might even need to get the police involved. This woman (and this website) just keeps getting shadier and shadier.

I have checked into hiring an attorney. I have two problems, though: I am not a Canadian citizen; I live in Portugal; and attorneys are very expensive. An attorney in Toronto said in an email this could be resolved by arbitration, but that also could be more expensive. I live on a fixed income. I am retired, live on a pension. I have no address for Roxana and I have no phone number. I had contacted the Canadian Publishers Association, the Canadian Bar and the Writers' Union, which gave a list of attorneys I could contact. I cannot join the union because I am not a resident, nor a citizen of Canada. C'est la vie!

Mark

You need to explore legal action. I cannot believe the active disregard from this site for people who selflessly donated their works. To do it with someone who has a financial stake in it is borderline criminal. Did all these "editors" die in some massive plane crash we aren't aware of?

I'm genuinely starting to believe that that's the case. If these people were just straight up crooks, it wouldn't make sense to professionally (and I say "professionally" in hard quotes) publish material for 4 years only to suddenly randomly run off with our work. The only thing that keeps me from thinking they all died in a plane crash is that there don't seem to be any obituaries of them (or at least not of Roxana). So, I don't know what's going on. Is it really possible that each one of them are just so grossly unprofessional that they can run a website for 4 years and then all suddenly decide together that they don't feel like working anymore and never get back to it? Nothing about any of this adds up, and it's freaking me out. But again, as long as I don't find my story getting published under a different name, then at least I didn't lose anything. My heart goes out to Herman, though, for however much he's lost in this bs.

Agree with all that, especially Herman getting screwed over on the book deal. Absolutely befuddling.

I NEED to have my poem removed from this website. Should we all report the website to Google for copyright infringement?

Does anyone visit this site anymore?

I admit I do check in pretty regularly. At this point mainly out of habit and just dumb curiosity. I also want to make sure Roxana doesn't end up publishing my story on her site, because that would block me from getting it published elsewhere.

Hi, I'm sorry about your injury. Would there be anyway to change the title of my story?
