J. N. LANG - LESSON
I am 77 years old, a non-combat Vietnam vet, a former English teacher in a community college (28 years), formerly employed in many manual labor jobs (saw mills, ranches, construction, etc.), and married with two children and three grandchildren. I live in Lolo, a small town in western Montana.
I broke trail in two feet of soft snow,
legs heavy with a dull ache and
vision darkened by glare
Snow resists softly and insistently.
Sit down and it fits the body like an easy chair.
Lie down and it forms a cold casket.
Snow, I decided,
was something I could deal with.
The granite-flagged sky surprised me.
