DAVID E. HOWERTON - POEMS

David is a part time programmer and lives in the American River Canyon outside of Auburn Ca. He has done landscaping sign painting cooking and made jewelry to pay the bills. He and his wife live with two bossy cats. He has three adult daughters and eight grandchildren.
His hobbies include type design, soapstone carving, walks in the woods, collecting dragons, and a growing library of Science Fiction.

Bending watch robots 
vacuum floor 
spinning trying 
trying for last 
piece of dust. 
A blinking light 
dead center on top 
reports the floor clean. 

​

​--beyond those moments--

Bent light reaches across galaxy, 
touches a billion stars on the way. 
Just so we can go oh and ah one night, 
a thousand years apart, tears and smiles. 

​

​--at the moment when--

Sunlight almost fresh 
long shadows early morning. 
Most shops not open yet 
the near silence unsettles me. 
Finches hop across parking lot 
looking for bits of breakfast 
dropped on way to work. 
Insects glad today 
our excess. 

​

​--burnt gasoline and dead leaves--

Pollen covered car 
sits on roadside 
gathers grime. 
Dark puddles others cars 
drip leave horrible smell 
what a way to begin day. 
A rat having found 
a meal darts under car 
hiding from hawks. 

​

​--Beat in chair--

Beat in chair 
             watching 
shadows gather lengthen 
as evening comes. 
To much settles on mind 
hunt for switch 
call light grab a book. 
Spend night reading 
drinking beer wait for midnight. 
With luck tired enough 
for bed, but maybe not 
then it'll be time 
for letter writing.
